Promoting positive behaviour

Good behaviour is essential to good learning. The general aim of the school is to provide an atmosphere of mutual respect and collective responsibility. Pupils, parents/carers and staff all have an important part to play in producing and sustaining this positive ethos. The rules of the school are of a common sense nature, bearing in mind the interest and safety of all concerned.

The School Council led circle times with both classes to establish clear and concise rules for our school which are:

  • Kind hands, feet and words
  • Listen
  • Look after one another

In addition to this, each class will have their own tailor made rules using the school rules as a scaffold. These will be agreed with all children as a class and revisited regularly.

Discipline

“Wherever we discipline we seek to communicate and convey a sense of calmness in our language… it is about clear, respectful communication.” (Dr. Bill Rogers)

At Craignish we developed a Behaviour Policy in January 2020 with pupil and staff involvement and with the support of the Parent Council. Staff at Craignish recognise that all behaviours have a reason and seek to support pupils in crisis. There are three essential components in the structure of our Behaviour Policy: –

  • The development of good teacher/pupil relationships through which empathy, understanding, fairness, and trust may be established.

  • Regular positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviour and effort through appropriate rewards which have been agreed upon with Pupil Voice and staff, including marbles in a jar to earn class rewards, certificates at the monthly Achievement Assembly, verbal and written feedback, stickers and so on

  • Parental/Carer Support – parent/carer-school partnership

The School has systems, rules, rewards and sanctions. The system is regularly reviewed with staff, parents and through School Council.

Celebrating Achievement

Children work hardest when they know their work will be appreciated and praised.  All staff encourage pupils at all times and in all activities to give their best.  Their effort may be rewarded verbally by praise, or non-verbally by a smiley face or sticker.

The whole school celebrates achievement by giving certificates to award pupils for good work, effort or kindness shown to others.

Achievements are displayed in the classroom and Messenger 5 is used to email letters and certificates home. There are monthly achievement assemblies to which parents/carers are invited to attend to celebrate specific achievements for individual pupils over the month.

Wider-Curricular Activities

Children have the opportunity to participate in various out of school events. These vary from year to year depending on what tutors are available. In the past they have included bible studies, badminton, guitar and art and craft activities.
